A short page on purpose: the questions people actually type about echinacea, answered without padding. Follow the links for the long versions.

What does TCM use echinacea for?

Classically, the Western equivalent of a clearing, exterior-releasing herb at cold onset.

Does it actually work?

Researchers have spent real effort on this question. It’s still unclear whether echinacea can shorten the length of a cold.

How do I take it at home?

Short courses at the first signs of a cold work best; it isn't a daily tonic.

Who should not take it?

In traditional terms: daisy-family allergy applies; long continuous use is not advised. In modern terms: pregnant or nursing women, anyone on regular medication, and people with chronic conditions should ask a professional first.

Is it safe long-term?

On safety: it’s possibly safe for children to consume E. Purpurea  extract for short periods of time.

Long-term continuous use of any concentrated herb is a question for a practitioner, not a label. Food-level tea is a different, gentler story.

Consistency beats dose. A modest amount taken regularly usually does more than a heroic amount taken twice.
