Period Pain in TCM: Patterns, Herbs and What Actually Helps
Period Pain from a Traditional Chinese Medicine view: the underlying patterns, the herbs used for each, self-massage points, food and daily habits.
For period pain, Chinese medicine starts with a simple question: does heat make it better or worse? Cramps that melt with a hot water bottle point to cold in the uterus; the answer shapes everything that follows.
The patterns behind period pain
- Cold congealing in the uterus with pain eased by heat
- Qi and blood stagnation with clots and a heavy, dragging ache
- Deficiency pain that's dull and improves with rest
Same complaint, different machinery. That is why a herb that transforms one person's period pain can leave another person unchanged: the pattern underneath is not the same.
The herbs most often used
- Ginger (Sheng Jiang): settles nausea and a rebellious stomach
- Cinnamon (Rou Gui): warms the blood and encourages circulation in cold-type pain
- Mugwort (Ai Ye): warms the channels and stops cold-type menstrual pain
- Turmeric (Jiang Huang): moves blood and qi where there is fixed, stabbing pain
Acupressure you can do yourself
Massage each of these, sanyinjiao, guanyuan, with a firm circular pressure for about a minute. Soreness that eases as you press is a good sign you are in the right spot.
Food and daily rhythm
On the plate: Warm, cooked food all month; ginger brown sugar tea from three days before the period; nothing iced
In the day: Keep the lower abdomen and feet warm, moxa on the abdomen for cold patterns, gentle walking during the period
Start low, watch how your body responds, and give it a fair run of a few weeks before judging. If something feels wrong, stop; that feedback matters more than any article.
