Most disappointment with pomegranate traces back to the buy, not the herb: old stock, poor storage, vague labeling. A short checklist fixes most of it.

What good pomegranate looks like

Pomegranate is warm (peel), neutral (fruit) in nature with a sweet, sour, astringent flavor profile, so the dried herb should still smell alive: distinct and clean, never stale or dusty. Color should be typical of the species, not bleached or uniformly brown from age.

Where to buy

Whichever channel you choose, prefer sellers who rotate stock and store herbs away from light and heat. pomegranate fades with exposure like any dried plant product.

Storing it at home

Airtight glass, a dark cupboard, no steam from the kettle. Whole pomegranate keeps its character for months this way; powders fade faster and are best bought in small amounts. Label the jar with the month you bought it and trust your nose over the calendar.

When to throw it out

No smell, off smell, mold, or insects: gone, without negotiation. Herbs are cheap; the risk of brewing something spoiled is not worth the savings.

Herbs work best as part of a pattern, not as a solo act. If your symptoms keep coming back, that is the moment to get a proper TCM diagnosis rather than to keep self-prescribing.
