A short page on purpose: the questions people actually type about pomegranate, answered without padding. Follow the links for the long versions.

What does TCM use pomegranate for?

Classically, the peel (Shi Liu Pi) astringes the intestines in chronic diarrhea, a classic anti-parasitic herb.

Does it actually work?

A few trials have looked at this directly. Studies have been done to see whether various products from pomegranate can influence levels of cholesterol and other lipids, but no clear effects have been demonstrated.

How do I take it at home?

Fruit and juice as food; peel only in decoctions, professionally guided.

Who should not take it?

In traditional terms: peel is mildly toxic at dose, a professional-use herb. In modern terms: pregnant or nursing women, anyone on regular medication, and people with chronic conditions should ask a professional first.

Is it safe long-term?

A few cautions from the research literature: pomegranate usually doesn’t have side effects, but some people may have digestive tract symptoms.

Long-term continuous use of any concentrated herb is a question for a practitioner, not a label. Food-level tea is a different, gentler story.

None of this replaces a practitioner who can look at your tongue, feel your pulse and ask awkward questions. Use this as background, not as a prescription.
