The question behind every search for Valerian is usually is it safe, and the honest answer has conditions. Here they are, laid out plainly.

What the research says about safety

On safety: research suggests that valerian is generally safe for short-term use by most adults. It has been used with apparent safety in doses of 300 to 600 milligrams daily for up to 6 weeks. The safety of long-term use of valerian is unknown. Together, you can make shared, well-informed decisions.

The traditional warnings

Chinese medicine has its own caution list, based on the herb's nature rather than trials: can feel groggy next morning at high doses; combine carefully with sedatives. A practitioner checks your pattern before prescribing precisely for this reason.

Common-sense rules

Keep to food-level amounts unless a practitioner says otherwise, take breaks rather than running any herb continuously for months, and stop at the first sign that something disagrees with you. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on prescription medication or managing a chronic condition, talk to a professional before starting.

Consistency beats dose. A modest amount taken regularly usually does more than a heroic amount taken twice.
