Your First TCM Visit for Cough: What to Expect
Booking a first TCM appointment for cough is easier when you know what the hour looks like. Spoiler: most of it is questions, and the odd ones matter most.
The questions
Expect a long interview: sleep, energy, appetite, digestion, stress, thirst, temperature preference, and the full history of your cough. Seemingly unrelated details, cold hands or vivid dreams, are diagnostic information in this system.
The tongue and the pulse
The practitioner will look at your tongue and feel your pulse at both wrists. Do not brush your tongue that morning, and skip coffee right before; both genuinely change what they see and feel.
The diagnosis, in pattern language
For cough, the working patterns usually include: wind-cold cough with clear, watery phlegm and chills; wind-heat cough with yellow phlegm and sore throat; dry lung cough after the acute stage has passed. Your prescription targets the one you actually match, not the complaint label.
What you leave with
Typically a herbal formula, dietary adjustments (warm pear and rock sugar for dry cough), and often self-massage or lifestyle notes. Follow-ups are usually a week or two out, because the prescription is adjusted to how you responded, not repeated blind.
The honest caveats
Bring your medication list and your diagnosis history. Good practitioners work alongside conventional care, and for cough there are situations where a doctor should be first in line.
None of this replaces a practitioner who can look at your tongue, feel your pulse and ask awkward questions. Use this as background, not as a prescription.
