Hawthorn: Dosing, Food Levels and When to Stop
With hawthorn, more isn't more. Here is the working range practitioners and studies tend to agree on, and the signs you have gone past it.
The working range
10 to 15 grams of dried berry in tea or congee after a heavy dinner.
Stay at food level: a few cups of tea, a spoon of powder, the amounts a cook would use. Concentrated extracts compress several servings into one capsule, so follow the label rather than free-pouring.
What the studies used
A few cautions from the research literature: no research studies have tested whether it is safe to use hawthorn for more than 16 weeks. Side effects of hawthorn can include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle pain.
Signs you have overdone it
Hawthorn is slightly warm in nature. Push a warming herb hard and you feel flushed, restless, dry-mouthed; push a cooling herb and digestion turns sluggish. Either way, the fix is the same: stop, let things settle, restart at half the amount.
Worth knowing: If you take any type of medicine, talk with your health care provider before using any herbal product; some herbs and medicines interact in harmful ways. Federal Regulation of Herbal Products Depending on what’s in them, how they’re intended to be used, and how they’re administered (orally or topically), herbal products are regulated in a variety of ways.
Herbs work best as part of a pattern, not as a solo act. If your symptoms keep coming back, that is the moment to get a proper TCM diagnosis rather than to keep self-prescribing.
