Sleep and Insomnia in TCM: Patterns, Herbs and What Actually Helps
Sleep and Insomnia from a Traditional Chinese Medicine view: the underlying patterns, the herbs used for each, self-massage points, food and daily habits.
Few things feel as unfair as being exhausted and unable to sleep. Chinese medicine does not treat insomnia as one disease, it asks why your mind will not settle, and the answer changes the remedy.
The patterns behind sleep and insomnia
- Liver qi constraint with a mind that will not switch off
- Heart-spleen deficiency with light, dream-disturbed sleep and daytime fatigue
- Yin deficiency with night heat and a restless body
Same complaint, different machinery. That is why a herb that transforms one person's sleep and insomnia can leave another person unchanged: the pattern underneath is not the same.
The herbs most often used
- Chamomile (Yang Gan Ju): calms the spirit for a restless evening mind
- Jujube (Da Zao): calms the spirit with licorice and wheat in Gan Mai Da Zao Tang
- Lavender (Xun Yi Cao): soothes liver qi constraint behind irritability and insomnia
- Valerian (Xie Cao): settles the spirit where disturbed shen keeps sleep shallow
- Asian ginseng (Ren Shen): generates fluids and calms the spirit
- Sour jujube seed (Suan Zao Ren) is the flagship insomnia herb and pairs naturally with red date tea
Acupressure you can do yourself
Massage each of these, anmian, shenmen, yintang, with a firm circular pressure for about a minute. Soreness that eases as you press is a good sign you are in the right spot.
Food and daily rhythm
On the plate: Warm congee with red dates and longan in the evening; no green tea after mid-afternoon
In the day: A fixed wind-down hour, warm foot bath before bed, screens away from the pillow
None of this replaces a practitioner who can look at your tongue, feel your pulse and ask awkward questions. Use this as background, not as a prescription.
